Ya'qub Beg served as an army officer of the Khoqand Khanate. After leading a successful rebellion, he made Kashgar his capital in 1865, and proclaimed himself amir of the independent state of Kashgaria in 1867. From this time until 1877 the Chinese lost control of most cities in Sinkiang (Xinjiang). Ya'qub Beg sought an alliance and support from the Ottoman sultan, 'Abd ak-'Aziz,an he is named on a series of coins dating from 1873.
