China, Warring States Period, [GBCA 80] bronze 'Wan Qian', 395-289 B.C., from the State of Wei, obverse inscribed 'Yuan' (name of a city in Wei in modern day Shansi Province), 42.3x1.1mm, weighs 8.6g, (Harthill 6.3). Barely visible cracks. 'Wan Qian' were first circulated in the State of Wei, with the city Yuan among the first to mint them. Its design quickly propagated to most of the other states due to the ease of use relative to earlier forms of money in the period, with its shape an obvious progenitor to later currency which has a round shape but a square hole. Historically important.
