1940s an early time photo of Sung Wong Toi, the "holy mountain" of Ma Tau Chung. During the occupation of Hong Kong, the Japanese army dynamited the entire rock mass and removed most pieces of it to expand Kai Tak Airport. Only after the war were the remaining remains of Sung Wong Toi cut into its present-day form. It was not until the 1950s that it was placed in now Sung Wong Toi Park.
