($500-1,000) The co-ops served another purpose that allowed local people to purchase stock and become shareholders. Stock was inexpensive and everyone had the opportunity to buy stock and share in the profits. However, they were limited in the amount of the stock they could purchase so that no one could gain a controlling interest. These economic programs brought independence and self-sufficiency to these settlements, thus allowing the Mormon Church to expand in Utah Territory early.
