Large beehive underprint. No. 1995. Thin blue-gray paper. Signed by H. B. Clawson. Printed script signature of Brigham Young. Drawn by Henry Maiden and Engraved by D. McKenzie. The printing was done by Joseph Bull, a printer of the Deseret News. In the fall of 1858, when it became apparent that there would be no Utah War, the Church members returned to their homes (see previous lot). The Deseret Currency Association then decided to issue engraved notes. Rust notes that, "On 1 September 1858 Brigham Young published in the Deseret News that the engraved notes were nearly finished and those holding the typeset notes were to turn them in to their bishops in exchange for engraved notes at par value."
