Auction: 9037 - The "Pierron" Collection of British Commonwealth Missing Colours
Lot: 1634

Pitcairn Islands 1964-65 1/2d. complete sheet of 60 numbered "1204" at top right, all except seven stamps at the lower left with blue omitted, fine. With normal sheet for comparison. Pierron PT72MCa, £66,250; S.G. 36a, £31,800. Photo Estimate £ 25,000-30,000 Note: The missing blue causes the loss of colour from the clothing of three of the people on the boat. The error came from a batch of 49 sequentially numbered sheets purchased on the Island at the time of issue by a dealer. The error remained undiscovered until early 2008 – some 44 years after issue. Most of sheet number 1204 was affected by the error; just seven examples from the lower left of the sheet were unaffected. Sheets either side of 1204 were also unaffected. The error was first offered by auctioneers Philangles on behalf of the finder in March 2008
