Zanzibar 1872 (2 Sept.) 1d. pink envelope from London "For Dr. Livingstone Care of the Foreign Office Whitehall", signed "J.B. Braithwaite" (the Livingstone family lawyer, who was involved in drawing up the trust deed for Livingstone´s children) and with London c.d.s. (2.9) on reverse. A remarkable cover to Livingstone who was, at this time in Tanganyika, nearing the end of his final expedition. Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: Due to the fact that there was no Post Office in Zanzibar at this time, the place from which Livingstone´s supplies were sent into the interior, mail would have had to be sent by diplomatic bag to the Consul on the island. It is not known whether this letter reached Dr. Livingstone before his death on 1st. May 1873. This envelope was found, together with a letter to Livingstone sent from Bombay in November 1872, care of Sir Bartle Frere who was in Zanzibar that year. It is possible that this cover returned to England with Livingstone´s corpse in April 1874.
