Auction: 9027 - Bonds & Shares of the World
Lot: 503
Manor of Saddleworth cum Quick, Yorkshire. A very unusual vellum indenture representing 7 shares in the Manor, 1801, a printed document with manuscript insertions, 44.4cms x 33cms. Joseph Mellor of Ashton Under Lyne and James Ingham of Dobcross grant John Broadbent 7 shares (of a total of 828) with it´s Rights, Royalties, Members and Appurtances, AND of all Commons, Common of Pasture, Wastes, Mines, Quarries, Warrens, Furzes, Heaths, Morrs, Marshes, Waters, Watercourses, Fishings, Wiers, Dams, Ferriages, Ponds, Pools, Ways, Paths, Passages, Courts Leet, Courts baron, View of Franpledge, Perquisites and Profits of Courts etc., signed and sealed by both Mellor and Ingham, some slight discolouration but very fine. The document appears to be based on a normal lease of property as it also makes provision for the payment of a Rent of one Pepper Corn at the end of the term. It would appear that the origin of the manor being divided into shares originates in 1791 when the manor was sold to 31 local entrepreneurs and local tenants following the death of James Farrer.
