Mediterranean Electric Telegraph, certificate for £10/250 francs, 1853, signed by John W. Brett as director, attractive coats of arms of France, Great Britain and Sardinia at top, black, text in mixed French, English and Italian, embossed seal at top, good very fine. This underwater (submarine) telegraph connected the Islands of Corsica and Sardinia and then onwards to the North coast of Algeria. The African cable failed on several attempts and the concession was surrendered in 1856. John W. Brett was a pioneer of submarine cables in Europe and was also involved with the Atlantic cable in 1854. Estimate £ 50
