Anglo-Saxon, Kingdom of Mercia, Ceolwulf I (821-823), Penny, 1.25g, East Anglian mint, Heorberht, crude diademed bust right, +ceolvlf rex m, Mercian uncial m, rev. moneyer´s name in three lines divided by two lines with crook at each end, her/+ebe/rht, second and third line inverted (BMC 108; cf. SCBI 30, 196; N.392; S.927), as found, creased, edge crack at 12 o´clock, very fine, very rare Estimate £ 1,800-2,200 Ceolwulf I was the brother of Coenwulf, succeeding him in 821. He proved unable to hold the Mercian kingdom together, with Kent and later East Anglia breaking out into revolt. The crude execution of these East Anglian issues reflects these events.
