Edward III (1327-77), third coinage, 1344-1351, second period, 1344-1346, Quarter-Noble, 2.18g, London, m.m. cross pattée, shield within double tressure of six arcs, pellets on cusps, edwar rex angl z franc d hyb, inverted apostrophe stops, rev. floriated cross each limb terminating in a fleur de lis, ornamented panel at centre containing letter l, leopard in each quarter, exaltabitvr in gloria, double saltire stops (Schneider 2- obverse die duplicate; N.1109; S.1480), roundly centred obverse, reverse struck off centre, scuffs and weakness in places on obverse, very fine, extremely rare, the first Quarter-Noble issued Estimate £ 3,000-4,000 A recent find. To our knowledge, this is the first example of this coin to come on the market in over twenty years. In addition to the Schneider Collection example there are thought to be only three other examples of this coin. This is therefore most likely to be the fifth known.
