Stephen, Penny, 1.41g, irregular Awbridge type, uncertain Northern? mint, as regular type except sceptre to right of bust, se[ ], rev. voided cross in fleured quatrefoil, [ ] n ii. d [ ] (Allen BNJ 76 374/376 same dies; cf. N.881; cf. S.1282), very fine for issue, very rare Estimate £ 1,500-2,000 This enigmatic coin belongs to a small group previously attributed to Prince Henry of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon. In Martin Allen´s recent corpus of the Awbridge type, BNJ 76, he writes that these pieces could be contemporary imitations but, being of good weight, ´it is possible that the coins from this group were struck in the area of Northern England (Northumberland and Cumberland) under Scottish control from the late 1130s to 1157 using northern Pennine silver.´
