A Great War ´1916, French Theatre´ M.M. to Private G. Brown, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Who Died of Wounds, 21.11.1916 Military Medal, G.V.R. (9237 Pte. G. Brown. 1/R.Innis:Fus:), minor edge bruise, good very fine Estimate £ 240-280 M.M. London Gazette 11.11.1916 9237 Pte. G. Brown, R. Innis. Fus. 9237 Private George Brown, M.M., born Derryloran, County Tyrone; served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in the Gallipoli Theatre of War, from 17.3.1915; Brown´´s battalion as part of the 87th Brigade, 29th Division were in action on the Somme during July-November 1916; in particular on the 1st day of the battle as part of the attack at Beaumont-Hamel, ´´advancing on right of Brigade and south of the Y Ravine - soon cut down by machine gun fire from the front and both flanks. Those men that did get forward would be held up at uncut wire and the small parties that cleared this soon killed or taken prisoner. Withdrew to British line. Casualties (including Commanding Officer Lieutenant-Colonel R.C. Pierce who was killed) - 549´´ (British Battalions on the Somme, R. Westlake, refers); the battalion also undertook tours in the front line of the Gueudecourt and Lesboeufs sectors; Brown died of wounds, 21.11.1916 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
