London Gazette 23.11.1916 Captain John Henry Reginald Yardley, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Special Reserve. M.C. London Gazette 20.4.1920 Capt. John Henry Reginald Yardley, D.S.O., R. Innis. Fus., S.R., ´´For distinguished service in connection with operations against the Northern Turkana and kindred tribes. Dated 3rd June, 1919.´´ Captain John Henry Reginald Yardley, D.S.O., M.C., born 1881; commissioned (from Militia) Second Lieutenant, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 5.1.1901; served in South Africa February -May 1902; Captain 5.7.1911; served during the Great War from 21.8.1914 (M.I.D. London Gazette 25.9.1916; Egypt, Order of the Nile, 4th Class, London Gazette 9.3.1917); served in East Africa 1918, in operations against the Northern Turkana, Marille, Donyiro and kindred tribes, in the vicinity of the Southern Sudan boundary to the west of Lake Rudolf, 20.4.1918-19.7.1918; Yardley particularly distinguished himself in action whilst in command of the 6th Company, Equatorial Battalion, ´´Capatain Yardley with 70 ´´Equats´´, 30 Carriers, 30 levies, 3 Soudanese officers and 6 servants fought a pitched battle at Kangala. Against some 3-400 regular Abyssinians and levies backed by large numbers of Turkana who remained uncommitted. The Abyssinians attacked with reckless bravery but were beaten off, many of their leaders were killed and next day they fled back to Ethiopia over the Kibish River. All 3 Soudanese officers were killed and Yardley lost 12 or so killed whilst at least 33 dead Abyssinians were counted´´. (African General Service Medals, R.B. Magor, refers).
