Northampton, February 1898; Able Seaman, H.M.S. Antelope, 28.11.1901; Leading Seaman, H.M.S. Vivid, 7.11.1905; served in H.M.S. Sutlej, 7.5.1908-8.3.1909 during which time he particpated in the rescue operations after the Messina Earthquake, 1908, and was one of the men from the Navy who landed from the ships to give assistance; Petty Officer, H.M.S.
