Military Cross, G.V.R., reverse engraved ´N. Ward. Lieut. D.C.L.Inf. 31.7.18´, good very fine, in Royal Mint case of issue, with the following contemporary documentation: - Recipient´s letter of appointment as a Second Lieutenant from No. 2 Cadet Battalion to the 3rd Battalion Duke of Cornwall´s Light Infantry, dated 14.12.1917 - Two Letters to the recipient referring to his investiture, dated 20.11.1919 and 9.12.1919 respectively - Newspaper cutting of recipient´s Obituary Estimate £ 450-500 M.C. London Gazette 7.11.1918 T./2nd Lt. Norman Ward, D.C.L.I. ´´For conspicuous gallantry and good leadership. He led his platoon, which formed part of a raiding party, over very difficult ground with great skill, and attacked an enemy machine gun, when he was severely wounded. His conduct throughout was an example of courage and determination, and he greatly assisted in the success of the operation.´´ Lieutenant Norman Ward, M.C., a native of Milldene Avenue, Tynemouth, joined the local constabulary in 1913; commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant 7th Battalion Duke of Cornwall´´s Light Infantry, 28.11.1917, ´´as a Lieutenant with the army during the First World War he led the storming of a German machine gun post. During the battle he had his right leg blown off below the knee by an enemy grenade and was afterwards awarded the MC for his bravery... served in the police force even after having part of his leg blown off in combat..... rose to the rank of a uniformed inspector with the Tynemouth force which he first joined in 1913..... Mr. Ward was one of the few men ever to play a key role in the police force after suffering a serious disability.´´ (Newspaper article included in lot refers).
