x Pair: Paymaster R.N. Bullen, Royal Navy China 1857-60, no clasp, unnamed as issued; Abyssinia 1867-68 (Paymaster R.N. Bullen, H.M.S. Octavia), suspension re-affixed on last, very fine (2) Estimate £ 400-450 Paymaster Robert Bullen, born 1827; joined the Royal Navy, 1844, and was appointed as Clerk H.M.S. Agincourt, March 1845; appointed Passed Clerk H.M.S. Spiteful, March 1846, returning to Agincourt (Flag ship Rear-Admiral Sir T. Cochrane) in July; Bullen is mentioned in Cochrane´´s despatch (London Gazette 29.9.1846) as one of four of his personal staff during the six day expedition for the capture and destruction of the Forts and Batteries on the River Brune, Borneo, 8.7.1846; H.M. Ships Agincourt, Hazard, Iris, Ringdove, Royalist, Spiteful and H.E.I.C. Ship Phlegethon supplied the Brigade of seamen, Rockets and Field Pieces landed; appointed to H.M.S. Sampson for service off the West Coast of Africa, from December 1850; promoted Purser and Paymaster, 20.2.1852, in consideration of his services at the destruction of Lagos (London Gazette 20.2.1852); served as Paymaster in H.M.S. Retribution during the Second China War; later service included in H.M.S.´´s Russell, Octavia, Valiant and Narcissus; he was Pensioned from the latter 10.5.1876. Provenance: Captain K.J.
