Cordner, Royal Artillery, Late Bengal Artillery, Who Commanded the Artillery During the Bhootan Expedition, 1864-66 Indian Mutiny 1857-58, no clasp (1st Lieut. Jas. E. Cordner, 6th Bengal Art.); India General Service 1854-95, two clasps, Bhootan, Northwest Frontier (Lieut. J.E. Cordner. Bengal Arty.), ´e´ of surname double struck on last, toned, good very fine (2) Estimate £ 600-800 General James Edward Cordner (1829-1901), born Northern Ireland; commissioned Second Lieutenant Bengal Artillery, 1845; Lieutenant 1852; served as a member of the newly formed Peshawur Mountain Train Battery in the subduing of the Aka Khel tribe on the Trans-Indus Frontier, March 1855, and served with the same battery against the Rabia Khels in August of the same year; served against the Waziris and in the Koorum Expedition; served during the Indian Mutiny, and fought against the rebels of the 55th N.I. and was present in the affair at Salim Khan, April 1858, and the storming of the Sattana Heights, May 1858; after the Mutiny all artillery was moved from H.E.I.C. command to the Royal Artillery, so Cordner was promoted 2nd Captain R.A., 27.8.1858; he commanded the Peshawur Mountain Train Battery during the Cossyah Hill Campaign, 1862-63; Captain, 29.2.1864, he commanded the Artillery for the Bhootan Expedition, 1864-65 (Mentioned in Despatches); advanced Lieutenant-General 1888; appointed Colonel Commandant of the Royal Artillery, 1893; promoted General 1895; he died after 56 years on active duty at Torbay Mount, Cockington, Torquay.
