x A Rare ´Barrow´s Volunteer Cavalry´ Mutiny Pair to Lieutenant W.E.M.B. Ramsay, Later Probyn´s Horse, He Was Mentioned in His Commander´s Despatches, For Services During the Mutiny, 1858 Indian Mutiny 1857-58, two clasps, Defence of Lucknow, Lucknow (Lieutt. W.E.M.B. Ramsay Volunteer Cavy.); China 1857-60, two clasps, Taku Forts 1860, Pekin 1860 (Lieut. W.E.M.B. Ramsay. 11th Bengal Cavy.), officially impressed, generally very fine or better (2) Estimate £ 1,800-2,200 Lieutenant William Elphinstone Michael Bruce Ramsay (1836-62), born Midnapore, Bengal, son of Colonel Michael Ramsay of the 24th Native Infantry; educated at Mr. T. Alfrice´´s, Tunbridge Wells, and Messrs. Mayor & Brackenbury; commissioned Ensign Bengal Army 1856, and was assigned to the 17th Native Infantry, 27.8.1856; the 17th N..I. mutinied at Azimgarh, 22.6.1857, and Ramsay barely escaped with his life to Allahabad; the next day he was promoted Lieutenant and assigned to the fabled Barrow´´s Volunteer Cavalry; he served in several engagements with them including at Futtehpore, Owng, Pando, Nuddee, the 1st Cawnpore, Oonam, Busseerutgunge, Mungurwarah, Allumbagh, the 1st Relief of Lucknow, the defence of Lucknow under General Outram, Guilee, the defence of Allumbagh, and the final capture of Lucknow; Ramsay was Mentioned in Barrow´´s Despatch to the Chief of the Staff, 1st of Major-General Sir J. Outram´´s (G.C.B.) Division London Gazette 17.2.1858; Ramsay was posted to Probyn´´s Horse for service during the 2nd China War, and served with the regiment at the capture of the Taku Forts and Pekin; he died of lockjaw at Amballa, 1862, and his China Medal was sent directly to his mother at ´´34 Inverness Road, Bayswater, London.´´
