x Pair: Captain G.W. Allen, Royal Navy Baltic 1854-55, unnamed as issued; Abyssinia 1867-68 (Lieut. G.W. Allen. H.M.S Dryad), good very fine (2) Estimate £ 400-500 Captain George Woronzow Allen, R.N., joined the Royal Navy as Cadet, 1855; served with H.M.S. Nile during the Baltic Campaign, 1854-55; Midshipman 1857; advanced Lieutenant, whilst serving in H.M.S. Leopard, 1861; served as Flag Lieutenant to Commodore L.G. Heath in the Octavia, 1865-67; transferred as Acting Commander of H.M.S. Dryad whilst Commander Thomas Fellowes was ashore in command of the Naval Rocket Brigade during the Abyssinia Campaign, 1867-68 (Mentioned in Despatches London Gazette 30.6.1868); later service included with H.M. Ships Duke of Wellington, Tamar, Pheasant and the Contest; whilst serving in the latter (1875-78) the Admiralty Board expressed satisfaction of his services in the expedition up the Sherboro River, whilst lent from H.M.S. Contest for services with the Government of the Gold Coast; Commander 1877; appointed to the Command of H.M.S. Algerine, 1881; he received their Lordships approval whilst in command of Algerine for the proceedings he employed in connection with the conveyance of the Zulu Chief Cetshwayo from the Cape Colony to Port Durnford; retired Captain; died 5.1.1915.
