x Pair: Major Sir Alexander MacKenzie, Bt, 11th Native Infantry Army of India 1799-1826, short hyphen reverse die type, one clasp, Bhurtpoor (Ensign A. MacKenzie, 11th N.I.), officially impressed, light pitting from Star; Maharajpoor Star 1843 (Ensign A. Mackenzie 11th N.I.), engraved centrally in running script over two lines, with contemporary silver eyelet and straight bar suspension, otherwise good very fine (2) Estimate £ 2,400-2,600 Major Sir Alexander MacKenzie, Bt., born at Contin, Ross-shire, 1805, he was the eldest son of Sir George Steuart MacKenzie, the 7th Baronet MacKenzie of Coul; educated at Edinburgh High School; entered the service of the Honourable East India Company as a Cadet, 1824; he arrived in India the following year, and after a brief period with the 16th Native Infantry, he transferred as Ensign 11th Bengal Native Infantry; he served with the regiment at the Siege and Capture of Bhurtpoor, 1825-26; Lieutenant 1826; Acting D.A.Q.M.G., Saugor Division, 12.12.1838-11.2.1839; present under Sir T. Anbury during the occupation of Jhansi, 1838-39; served as Deputy Judge Advocat General for the Army of Gwalior, during the Gwalior campaign; was present at the battle of Maharajpoor, 29.12.1843, when he had his horse killed under him during the engagement; Captain 1845; took part in the first campaign on the Sutlej but was not engaged in any of the four major battles and as a consequence was not entitled to the campaign medal; served as Adjutant at Fort Chunar, 1847-51; upon the death of his father in 1848, Sir Alexander succeeded to the title of Mackenzie of Coul, as 8th Baronet; retired Honorary Major 1854; died at Kinellan Lodge, Coul, 3.1.1856.
