x India General Service 1854-95, one clasp, Umbeyla (Lieut. G.E. Macpherson. 3 Punjab Infantry.), a post 1873 issue, nearly extremely fine Estimate £ 240-280 Captain George Ewen Macpherson (1843-1879), born Meerut, the second son of Major-General Sir James Duncan Macpherson, K.C.B., Bengal Infantry, and grandson of Lieutenant-General J. Kennedy, C.B., Bengal Cavalry; educated in Edinburgh and Paris; commissioned Ensign 6th European Regiment Native Infantry, 1860; transferred 17th Native Infantry, 1861; saw service with the 4th Gurkha Regiment before serving with the 3rd Punjab Infantry during the Umbeyla Campaign; transferred Bengal Staff Corps, May 1865, and in the following September he was appointed Aide-de-Camp to Major-General Colin Troup, C.B., Commanding the Benares and afterwards the Allahabad and Meerut Divisions; he remained on Troup´´s personal staff for 18 months, before taking civil employment as Assistant Commissioner at Delhi, Amritsar, Peshawar, Hoti-Mardan, Kasauli, Gujerat and Hazara; appointed Cantonment Magistrate at Mian Mir, 1876; the following year he served as Assistant-Commissioner and Officiating Deputy-Commissioner Ludhiana; on the 17th September 1879 travelling to take up his appointment as Officiating Deputy-Commissioner of Gurgaon, he died at Karnal and is buried in the New Cemetery there.
