Uganda 1896 (Nov.) Type-set Stamps handstamped "L" Some of the first printings are found handstamped with the letter "L". The purpose was to differentiate, for audit purposes, between local and overseas mail. It proved impractical for handstamped stamps were soon used on overseas mail. The handstamping was carried out by Robert R. Racey, the official in charge of stamps at Kampala 1a. to 1r. set in marginal or corner blocks of four, the top left 1a. showing small "o" in "postage", the 2a. with some light tone spots on reverse, otherwise fine.
