x Sudan British Military Forces in Egypt and Sudan, 1801 to 1913 Early and Historical Letters 1897 (20 Mar.) and 1898 (26 Oct.) four page a.l.s. from Sir Evelyn Baring (the latter with damaged privately carried mourning envelope signed "Cromer"), both written from Cairo to the wife of Major General Reginald Talbot. The contents of the former include "The presence of the English Army here is of immense importance. It is the weight at the bottom of the pendulum which makes the whole machine work".
