x Great Britain Postal History 1839 Uniform Four Pence Postage 1840 (5 Jan.) wrapper to the Paymaster General in Chelsea bearing a good strike of Carlisle handstruck "4" in black with a faint strike of despatch c.d.s. on reverse; the 4d. charge was cancelled on arrival in London and crowned Free applied on 6th January and manuscript "Official, G.Lills, Paym. Genl., Whitehall" with two different London backstamps for the following day. This is believed to be the only surviving handstruck "4" used in combination with Free datestamp.
