A Scarce Victorian Campaign Group of Five to Captain G.F. Cottam, Royal Navy, Mentioned in Despatches for the Operations in the Sea of Azoff, June 1855 India General Service 1854-95, one clasp, Pegu (Geo. F. Cottam. Midn. "Fox"); Baltic 1854-55, engraved in upright small sans serif capitals, ´George. Frederic. Cottam, Midsn. H.M.S. Prince Regent.´; Crimea 1854-56, two clasps, Sebastopol, Azoff (Geo. F. Cottam. Midn. "Agamemnon"), engraved in upright serif capitals; Turkey, Order of the Medjidieh, 5th Class, breast Badge, silver, silver-gilt and enamel; Turkish Crimea, British die, unnamed as issued, plugged with contemporary small bar and ring suspension, light contact marks throughout, otherwise nearly extremely fine (5) Estimate £ 1,400-1,800 Captain George Frederic Cottam, R.N., joined the Royal Navy as Cadet, 1850; he was appointed to H.M.S. Fox and served in her at the taking of Rangoon, Pegu and Prome; appointed to H.M.S. Prince Regent for service in the Baltic; served as Midshipman in H.M.S. Agamemnon (Captain Sir Thomas Sabine Pasley) in the Black Sea, 1855-56; he had charge of the second launch of the latter vessel, at the taking of Kertch and Yenikale and in the operations in the Sea of Azoff, especially in the firing of Taganrog, Marioupol and Gheisk, June 1855, for which he was mentioned in the despatches of Rear-Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons, 9.6.1855 (London Gazette 28.6.1855); further appointments included in H.M.S.´´s Monarch and Ganges, both in the Pacific station; in the latter vessel Cottam served as Flag Lieutenant to Admiral Sir Robert Baynes; Commander 1861; appointed to the command of the Speedwell, 1863, and whilst holding this appointment he received a sword of honour from Queen Isobella of Spain for services rendered to the Spanish Goverment at Tenerife during the insurrection at San Domingo; retired Captain 1870.
