Hume (15567) ´´In recognition of distinguished services in the Middle East during the period February 1941 to July 1941.´´ United States of America, Legion of Merit, Officer London Gazette 13.1.1948 Brigadier (temporary) Reginald Vernon Hume, O.B.E. (15567), late Royal Regiment of Artillery. The citation, dated 6.2.1946, and signed by President Harry S Truman, states: ´´Brigadier Reginald Vernon Hume, British Army, while serving as Director of Military Intelligence, British General Headquarters, Middle East Forces from February 1943 to November 1944 was most cooperative in working with the Intelligence Staff of the Headquarters United States Army Forces in the Middle East. Through him every facility of the British General Staff Intelligence was made available to the Headquarters of the American Forces, insuring a full and prompt exchange of enemy order of battle, defense, and topographic intelligence in Southeastern Europe and North Africa.´´ Brigadier Reginald Vernon Hume, C.M.G., C.B.E., T.D., (1898-1962), was the only son of Colonel C.V. Hume and Ursula Hume, and the God-son of Field Marshal the Earl Roberts of Kandahar, V.C., K.G., K.P., G.C.B., O.M., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., his father´´s former Chief in South Africa. Educated at Wellington College and Sandhurst, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, 25.1.1918, and served during the Great War in a Field Battery on the Western Front, 2.2-11.11.1918. Promoted Lieutenant, 25.7.1919, he served as A.D.C. to the Chief of the British Military Mission in Berlin, 10.1.1920 -31.3.1921, and was the Military Officer (Acting Military Attaché) attached to H.M. British Embassy in Berlin, 1.4.1921-31.3.1927. He retired from the Army in November 1928 in order to pursue a career in the City. In 1937 Hume joined the Territorial Army from the Reserve of Officers, and was promoted Major, Royal Artillery (Territorial Army), 24.8.1939. He served throughout the Second World War in the Middle East with British Military Intelligence, General Headquarters, and his appointments included General Staff Officer 2nd Class (Middle East), 1940-41; General Staff Officer 1st Class (Palestine, Syrian Campaign, and the Turkish Frontier), 1941-42; Deputy Director of Military Intelligence (Alamein Campaign), 1942-43; Director of Military Intelligence (Middle East), 1943-1944. In January 1945 he was appointed the Senior Military Government Officer, 1st Airborne Corps. Promoted Lieutenant-Colonel and Temporary Colonel, 20.3.1943, and Temporary Brigadier, 17.8.1943, he was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, 14.10.1943, and was awarded the American Legion of Merit. After the War Hume was released by the Army and transferred to the Foreign Office. His postings included Military Government Commander, Regierungsbezirk, Hannover, 1945-47; Regional Governmental Land Officer, Niedersachen, 1947-48; Director Education Branch, Control Commission for Germany, 1948-49; Deputy Educational Advisor, Control Commission for Germany, 1949; Deputy Land Commissioner, Schleswig Holstein, 1949-52; Land Commissioner, Schleswig Holstein, 1952-54. In April 1954 he was appointed Her Majesty´´s Consul at Kiel, a post he held until his retirement in 1956. For his post-war career he was appointed a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, 7.6.1951, and a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, 2.1.1956.
