Regt.); France, Second Empire, Legion of Honour, Knight´s breast Badge, 65mm including crown suspension x 42mm, silver, gold, and enamel, crown suspension re-affixed, minor damage to points of badge; Turkey, Ottoman Empire, Order of the Medjidieh, Fifth Class breast Badge, 67mm including Star and Crescent suspension x 48mm, silver and enamel; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian die, Hunt and Roskell issue, minor edge bruise to fourth, generally good very fine or better, together with the related miniature awards, and the following official documentation &c.: - Bestowal Document for the Legion of Honour, named to Major Gustavus Hume, and dated Paris, 21.6.1856 - Copy photograph of the recipient (6) Estimate £ 1,400-1,800 France, Legion of Honour, Knight London Gazette 4.8.1856 Brevet-Major Gustavus Hume, Aide-de-Camp and Deputy-Assistant Adjutant-General, 38th Regiment ´´For distinguished services before the enemy during the late war.´´ Turkey, Order of the Medjidieh, Fifth Class London Gazette 2.3.1858 Brevet Major Gustavus Hume, 38th Regiment ´´For distinguished services before the enemy during the late War.´´ Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Gustavus Hume, (1826-91), the second son of the Reverend Robert Hume of Dublin, was commissioned Ensign in the 38th (Staffordshire) Regiment of Foot, May 1843, and was promoted Lieutenant, June 1846, and Captain, September 1852. He served with the Regiment during the Crimean War, 1854-56, and was present at the Battle of Alma, the siege and fall of Sebastopol, was Aide-de-Camp to Major-General Sir John Campbell on the expedition to Kertch, and the First Assault on the Redan, 18.6.1855, in which Campbell was killed, and was Deputy-Assistant Adjutant-General of the 3rd Division from July 1855. Promoted Major, July 1855, he served with the 38th Foot during the Indian Mutiny from November 1857 to August 1858, and was present at the siege and capture of Lucknow, and with Major-General Sir James Hope Grant´´s Division during the summer campaign in Oude, where he took part in several minor actions. He served as Assistant Inspector of Volunteers, 1860-65, and was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel, March 1863. Appointed a Member of Her Majesty´´s Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at Arms, December 1872, he served as Clerk of the Cheque and Adjutant from January 1876, was created Lieutenant, November 1878, and was Knighted by the Queen at Windsor Castle, December 1880 (London Gazette 7.12.1880). Sir Gustavus Hume was the second of five brothers, four of whom held commissions in the Army: Lieutenant-General Sir Robert Hume, G.C.B., Major-General John Richard Hume, and Captain Walter Hume, whom Queen Victoria called ´´The Four Valiant Brothers´´. Sir Gustavus Hume married Miss Ellen Caroline Vernon, July 1857, and they had seven children, including Colonel Charles Vernon Hume.
