London Gazette 31.10.1902 Captain the Honourable Reginald Ward, Royal Horse Guards ´´In recognition of services in the operations in South Africa.´´ Captain the Honourable Reginald Ward, D.S.O., born London, June 1874, the son of William Ward, 1st Earl of Dudley, and Georgiana, Countess of Dudley, and younger brother of William Humble Ward, Later 2nd Earl of Dudley; educated at Eton; Commissioned Second Lieutenant, Royal Horse Guards, February 1895; Lieutenant, March 1896; Assistant Adjutant, March 1898-December 1899; served in South Africa 4.6.1899-2.6.1900 and as A.D.C. to Lieutenant-General Sir John French, K.C.B., 2.2.1901-11.7.1902, and present at the Relief of Kimberley, 15.2.1900; Paardeberg, 17-26.2.1900; and Driefontein, 10.3.1900; Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 29.7.1902) and awarded the D.S.O., the latter presented to him by H.M. the King, 18.12.1902. Captain Ward died in London, March 1904. Captain Ward´´s elder brother, William Humble Ward, 2nd Earl of Dudley, G.C.B., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O. was Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland, 1902-05, a post later held between 1918-21 by Ward´´s Commanding Officer in South Africa, Sir John French, Later Field Marshal the Earl of Ypres, K.P., G.C.B., O.M., G.C.V.O., K.C.M.G.
