John Hirst, R.A.F. ´´In recognition of valuable flying services performed in their various capacities - Flying Instructors, Test, Ferry, and Experimental Pilots.´´ Lieutenant John Hirst, O.B.E., A.F.C., born 1894, a native of Wombwell, Yorkshire; prior to the outbreak of the Great War Hirst was a solicitor´´s clerk and studied law; joined the Royal Naval Air Service and was posted to Eastchurch, 27.10.1917; Sub-Lieutenant (Observer) 1.2.1918; his papers give Hirst as a ´´qualified Naval Observer flown in seaplanes and land machines´´; Lieutenant Royal Air Force, 1.4.1918.
