x Natal 1894 Proposed Keyplate Series with new watermark, a handpainted essay in lilac with portions of the floral borders highlighted in Chinese white and with top and bottom tablets blank, executed on tracing paper (69x79mm.) dated "Feb. 9th 94.", together with three handpainted essays for suggested watermarks, each on tracing paper with the background in grey and the design in Chinese white, "A" showing "natal" diagonal, "B" showing "natal" vertical and "C" showing Rosette, the latter dated "feb. 13. 94". An attractive and unique group. Photo Estimate £ 1,000-1,200 Note: In 1894 the Agent-General for the Natal Government met with Walter Peace of De La Rue where a verbal agreement was given for the production of designs for a new keyplate and watermark. Peace wrote to the Agent-General enclosing the designs, as in the above lot. In 1896 a Special Committee recommended that a unified series for stamps for all Revenue purposes be issued, using the existing Natal 2 1/2d. value with the Queen´´s head keyplate design
