Second Lieutenant Thomas Abbey, M.M., served during the Great War with the 5th (Territorial Force) Battalion Yorkshire Regiment in the French Theatre of War from 18.4.1915; Abbey´´s Battalion as part of the 150th Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division, were in action on the Somme during August-November 1916, in particular: in successful operations between High Wood and Martinpuich, 15th-19th September, when the battalion suffered 252 casualties; operations at Eaucourt l´´Abbaye, 22nd September; and in close support during operations at Butte de Warlencourt and Gird lines; commissioned Temporary Second Lieutenant 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, 31.7.1918.
