He encouraged his Lewis-gun team forward under heavy enemy fire, and finally secured a position commanding the bridge over the Scarpe Deviation, and inflicted heavy casualties upon the enemy, whose harassing fire was becoming increasingly troublesome. When his No.1 was wounded, he immediately took his place and kept the gun in action for a considerable time, during which he himself was wounded.´´ M.M. London Gazette 17.12.1917 20288 Pte. C.D. Gladwin, York. R. (West Hartlepool) 63056 Corporal Charles D. Gladwin, D.C.M., M.M., enlisted as 20288 Private, Yorkshire Regiment; later transferring to the West Yorkshire Regiment; awarded the D.C.M. for his gallantry during the First Army´´s advance on the Sensée and Scarpe Canals around Douai, 11-16.10.1918. On the morning of the 12th October the left wing of the First Army made a large advance, as far as the northern branch of the Sensée canal and the Scarpe Canal Deviation, almost to the gates of Douai. The village of Corbehem and its farmland was found to be full of mines and booby traps, and orders were given that these places were not to be occupied until the engineers had removed the charges. The ground nearby, falling gently to the canal, gave no cover, and the eastern bank was strongly held. The West Yorkshire Regiment received no fire until six hundred yards from the canal, but continued to advance another three hundred yards until stopped by marshy ground. Later on in the day they made it to the banks of the Scarpe Deviation, with the orders to advance across the canal wherever possible. Douai was eventually taken on the 16th October.
