Bayley, D.C.M., M.M., formally 1927 Sergeant, served with the 19th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Territorial Force) in the French Theatre of War from 10.3.1915; at the time of the award of his D.C.M. his Battalion was involved in the build-up to the Battle of Cambrai, during which they were heavily gassed whilst holding a support position in Bourlon Wood- only 9 Officers and 61 other ranks remained fit for duty.
