In addition to his own duties, he carried out bold reconnaissances to ascertain the disposition of the enemy, showing as utter disregard of danger.´´ M.M. London Gazette 3.6.1916 1927 Sjt. G.J. Bayley, D.C.M., M.M., formally 1927 Sergeant, served with the 19th (County of London) Battalion, London Regiment (Territorial Force) in the French Theatre of War from 10.3.1915; at the time of the award of his D.C.M. his Battalion was involved in the build-up to the Battle of Cambrai, during which they were heavily gassed whilst holding a support position in Bourlon Wood- only 9 Officers and 61 other ranks remained fit for duty.
