A Great War ´French Theatre´ M.M. to Guardsman J. Wetherton, Coldstream Guards Military Medal, G.V.R. (16152 Pte. J. Wetherton. 2/C.Gds:), obverse brooch mounted, suspension re-affixed, nearly very fine Estimate £ 80-120 M.M. London Gazette 28.1.1918 16152 Pte. J. Wetherton, 2nd Bn. C. Gds. (Pontypridd) 16152 Guardsman James Wetherton, M.M., enlisted Coldstream Guards, 20.5.1915; served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards in the French Theatre of War, 6.4.1916-20.9.1916 and 5.1.1917-1.10.1918; he received a ´´G.S. Wound Back nr. Ginchy, 14-16.9.1916´´ (Service papers refer); Wetherton´´s Battalion were in action on the Somme in the Beaumont-Hamel sector in August 1916 before moving to the Ginchy Sector, 12.9.1916; in the early hours of the 15th, positioned on the right flank of the Brigade, the 2nd Battalion took part in an attack towards Lesboeuf; they received heavy casualties from enemy machine guns in sunken positions on the Ginchy-Flers Road; the position was stormed and the advance continued to the German first line, with the next objective being taken by 11.15am; the 2nd Battalion were relieved on the 16th September having suffered 440 casualties. Wetherton was discharged as medically unfit, 12.11.1918.
