Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, two clasps, Elandslaagte, Defence of Ladysmith (55 Corpl: A.M. Robbins. Imp: Lt: Horse), small cut to rim, otherwise good very fine Estimate £ 400-450 55 Corporal Arthur Mockeredge Robbins, killed in action at Wagon Hill, during the Defence of Ladysmith, 6.1.1900. ´´As a stirring fight full of dramatic interest and breathless excitement, full too of the heroic tenacity of the two most stubborn breeds of mankind, the engagement of January 6 will always be remembered. The splendid valour of the Imperial Light Horse, the steadfastness of the Manchesters, the irresistible determination of the Devons, will live in the traditions of the British Army, while Briton and Boer alike can recount with pride the long unyielding struggle on the main crest, or those desperate seconds of almost Homeric encounter round the gun pits on Wagon Point.´´ (The Times History of the War in South Africa refers) The Imperial Light Horse suffered 59 men killed or died of wounds during the action at Wagon Hill. Three Victoria Crosses were given for this action.
