A Great War 1918 ´Western Front´ D.C.M. to Sergeant P. Knightley, Royal Field Artillery Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.V.R. (L-14220 Sjt: P. Knightley. C.156/Bde: R.F.A.), gilded, good fine Estimate £ 300-400 D.C.M. London Gazette 4.3.1918 L./14220 Sjt. P. Knightley, R.F.A. (Kingsland Road, N.E.) ´´For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when the battery was exposed to a very destructive bombardment. During this period the S.O.S. was sent up by the infantry. In spite of heavy shelling, he at once ran to his gun, and by his display of coolness and disregard of danger inspired his men to keep firing until the situation was reported all clear. Two dumps were then burning, and had started exploding, and though the battery was ordered to stand clear, he insisted on staying and extinguishing the burning dumps, and succeeded in saving one. He gave a magnificent example of devotion to duty under most trying circumstances.´´ 14220 Sergeant Phillip Knightley, D.C.M., served during the Great War with the Royal Field Artillery in the French Theatre of War, from 11.12.1915.
