An Unusual Campaign Group of Six to Captain A.H. Quicke, Royal Navy, Present in H.M.S. Exmouth as Part of the Naval Rescue Operations After the Messina Earthquake, December 1908; He Served as Naval Attache at Santiago, Chile, During the Great War 1914-15 Star (Commr. A.H. Quicke, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt. A.H. Quicke. R.N.); 1897 Jubilee Medal; Chile, Order of Merit, Officer´s breast Badge, 55mm including condor suspension x 47mm, silver and enamel, major enamel damage, with rosette on riband; Messina Earthquake Medal 1908, generally very fine or better, together with the recipient´s Sword: - An Officer´s Sword of the Royal Navy, with 31 inch slightly curved fullered blade by HENRY WILKINSON (No. 34101), bearing foliate decoration, crowned anchor and Royal Arms, regulation brass (originally gilt) guard with QVC crown, fishskin grip and spring-clip retaining mechanism, and sword-knot, in black leather scabbard with brass fittings engraved ´A.H.Q.´, and brown leather scabbard bag with initials ´A.H.Q.´ (6) Estimate £ 700-800 Captain Alexander Hahnemann Quicke, joined as Cadet, Royal Navy, 1891; Midshipman, 1893; Sub Lieutenant 1896; Lieutenant 1898; posted to qualify as a Torpedo Lieutenant at H.M.S. Vernon (Torpedo School), 1.10.1900; served in H.M.S. Exmouth, 25.5.1907-31.5.1909, including during the Messina Earthquake disaster, December 1908; on leaving the Exmouth his Commanding Officer wrote, ´´Lt. Quicke, who left the Exmouth on paying off to under go an operation for injury he received in the performance of his duty, deserves the most favourable consideration. He has invented several things adopted by the Admiralty, and is a distinctly clever and useful officer who had suffered by his zeal in the discharge of his duties´´ (Service Papers refer); retired 6.4.1910; with the outbreak of the Great War he was given an emergency commission and briefly posted for service in H.M.S. Donegal (Cruiser), before being made Naval Attache at Santiago, Chile, September 1914; in carrying out his duties, ´´Warm appreciation expressed by Director General de la Vervada of the assistance to the development of the Chilean naval service. Has demonstrated the possession not only of a most thorough technical learning but also of personal qualities which made him highly esteemed by his fellow officers´´ (Service Papers, refer)´´; he was awarded the Chilean Order of Merit 2nd Class, ´´as an expression of appreciation of services rendered´´, August 1916; advanced Captain 1.2.1919.
