Five: Captain M.F. O´Reilly, Royal Navy China 1842 (M.F. O´Reilly, Midshipman, H.M.S. Druid.), pierced, with contemporary ring and swivel bar suspension; South Africa 1834-53 (M.F. O´Reilly. Additl. Lieutenant. H.M.S. "Castor."); Crimea 1854-56, one clasp, Sebastopol (Lieut. Montagu O´Reilly. HMS. Retribution. Sebastopol. Octr.-17th.-1854), contemporarily engraved in large serif capitals; Turkey, Ottoman Empire, Order of the Medjidieh, Fifth Class breast Badge, 74mm including Star and Crescent suspension x 58mm, silver, gold applique, and enamel, mint marks on reverse; Turkish Crimea, British die, unnamed and pierced as issued, contact marks, generally very fine (5) Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 Captain Montagu Frederick O´´Reilly, born February 1822, the only son of Lieutenant John O´´Reilly, R.N.; entered the Royal Naval College, February 1835; embarked as a Volunteer in H.M.S. Pelorus, and wrecked at Port Essington, Australia, November 1839; Midshipman, 1839; transferred to H.M.S. Druid, 1841, and served during the operations on and off the coast of China, and was present at the takings of Amoy and Ko-long-so, where he was placed in charge of a Signal station; appointed Mate of H.M.S. Excellent; transferred to H.M.S. Actaeon, 1845, and served on and off the coast of Africa; Acting-Lieutenant, August 1846, in H.M.S. Lily; served in H.M.S. Castor during the Third Kaffir War, 1850-53; Lieutenant, June 1852; served in H.M.S. Retribution at the reconnoitre of Sebastopol, when he sketched the fortifications; and the Senior Officer of that ship at the bombardment of Odessa (wounded) and at the attack on Fort Constantine, 1854; advanced Captain, June 1862; retired April 1870.
