London Gazette 11.10.1945 No. 7349503 Private Geoffrey Arnold Hitchcock, Royal Army Medical Corps (Pinner, Midd´´x) The Recommendation, dated 13.5.1945, states: ´´Private Hitchcock has given long service to the Highland Division, during which his conduct, cheerfulness, and cool disregard of the prevailing conditions have set a very high example. During operation Veritable in which Private Hitchcock was in charge of the team of stretcher-bearers attached to 1 Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders, it was largely due to his personal initiative and devotion to duty that all the Battalion wounded were collected from the open, dressed, and despatched to the Regimental Aid Post with the minimum delay. In one attack he alone dressed and evacuated 25 wounded men to the R.A.P. in the face of considerable small arms, mortar, and artillery fire. In another attack, while with a leading Company which held its position for two days under heavy fire and with the only two roads leading to the R.A.P. covered by enemy Machine Guns, he successfully directed and achieved the evacuation of casualties under smoke screens and in the dark. In and after the Rhine crossing he has carried on his fine example magnificently. Private Hitchcock has shown throughout a disregard for danger, untiring energy, and a cool cheerfulness which are of the highest order.´´
