N.I.), officially engraved good very fine Estimate £ 1,200-1,400 General John Liptrap, (1796-1878), born London, Commissioned Ensign, August 1817; Lieutenant, November 1818; posted to 2nd Battalion, 21st Native Infantry, Bengal Army, 1819; transferred to 42nd Native Infantry, May 1824; served in the Burma Campaign 1824-25, present at the capture of Mahatee, and took part in the advance through the Aracan as part of the force under Brigadier General Morrison; Adjutant, Chittagon Provincial Battalion, March 1825-30; Captain, June 1831; served with the 42nd Native Infantry during the First Afghan War, 1839-40; served in the First Sikh War, 1845-46; present during the occupation of Lahore; Major, February 1850; Lieutenant-Colonel, Commanding 42nd Native Infantry, May 1855; served during the suppression of the Sonthal Mutiny, the precursor to the Great Mutiny, July 1855- May 1856, and received the Thanks of Government; posted to 8th Native Infantry, September 1855; transferred to 45th Native Infantry, 1856; was Commanding the Regiment at Ferozepore when the Mutiny broke out at that station, 12.5.1857; he brought back his men on four seperate occasions when they mutinied and marched away with the Colours; thanked in Brigade Orders for his daring bravery, 13.5.1857; Brevet Colonel, June 1857; Major-General, August 1865; Lieutenant-General, March 1873; General, October 1877.
