Venerable (battleship), 1914-2.4.1915, and in H.M.S. Britannia, 16.5.1915-9.11.1918, he was serving in the latter when she became the last Royal Navy vessel to be sunk during the War, the Britannia was torpedoed off Cape Trafalgar by U-50, 9.11.1918, only two days before the armistice; Ward survived the action and re-engaged for service during the Second World War as a Commissioned Boatswain at H.M.S. Collingwood (Training Establishment), from 1.12.1939.
