M.I.D. London Gazette 9.9.1921 Brickell, Capt. H.J., attd. 1/80th Carnatic Infantry (Mesopotamia) Captain Herbert James Brickell, born Holborn, London; joined the 5th Royal Irish Lancers, 31.5.1906, and made a Bandsman the following year; Lance Corporal 30.5.1911; served during the Great War with the Regiment as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade in the French Theatre of War, from 15.8.1914; under the command of General Gough, the 3rd Cavalry Brigade was present during the Battle of Mons, where it fought a rearguard action in support of the retreating British Expeditionary Force; present at Le Cateau and at the Battle of the Marne, in October it were instrumental in the capture of the Monastery at Mont des Cats; Brickell was promoted Sergeant, in the Field, 2.11.1914; the 3rd Cavalry Brigade was also at Messines, which was the precursor to the 1st Battle of Ypres, during the former the 5th Lancers in conjunction with Indian troops put up a desperate resistance against larger German infantry and cavalry forces; Brickell was commissioned Second Lieutenant 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, 13.6.1916 (wounded July 1916); attached Adjutant and Temporary Lieutenant 14th Battalion Liverpool Regiment, 13.3-17.8.1917; Lieutenant 13.6.1917; on Brickell´´s application for a permanent commission in the Indian Army, the Commanding Officer of the 14th Battalion Liverpool Regiment gave the following testimonial of him: ´´This officer has done the duties of adjutant for the last few months and I consider him a most capable and promising officer. While in France in the cavalry - he behaved with great gallantry on several occasions and was granted the Russian Medal of St. George´´; transferred Indian Army, 3.12.1917, and was posted to the 86th Carnatic Infantry; attached Acting Captain, 80th Carnatic Infantry, 1.11.1918; Captain 13.6.1920, and served with his regiment in Mesopotamia, 1919-20.
