London Gazette 5.3.1920 Engineer Commander Henry Smalley Briggs, Royal Navy ´´For valuable services in carrying out repairs to H.M. Ships in the Baltic.´´ Engineer Rear-Admiral Henry Smalley Briggs, O.B.E., born Blackburn, Lancashire, 1877; educated at Manchester Municipal Technical School and Queen´´s College, Manchester; Commissioned Engineer Sub-Lieutenant, 1.7.1900; and posted to H.M.S. Empress of India; Engineer Lieutenant, 15.9.1904; Engineer Lieutenant-Commander, 15.9.1912; Engineer Commander, 15.12.1917; service during the Great War included in H.M.S. Lucia (Submarine Depot Ship), from 5.6.1916; his name was brought to notice by the Captain of the Tenth Submarine Flotilla ´´for good repair work and organisation in "Lucia"´´ (service papers refer); H.M.S. Egmont, November 1919, and took passage to serve with the British Military Mission in South Russia, from 2.1.20, and awarded the O.B.E.; Engineer Captain, 31.12.1926; Engineer Rear-Admiral, 1.12.1932; transferred Retired List, 18.3.1932; emigrated to New Zealand, 21.12.1946; disappeared, presumed dead, 5.9.1949.
