Houstoun, Royal Navy, Who Served With Captain Prothero´s Naval Brigade During the Boer War, and Commanded the Destroyers H.M.S. Oriole, Trenchant and Winchelsea During the Great War Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, 1st type, one clasp, Belmont (Mid: J.F. Houstoun, R:N: H.M.S. Doris); Queen´s South Africa 1899-1902, 2nd type, one clasp, Belmont (Midsn. J.F. Houstoun, R.N., H.M.S. Doris.), minor edge bruising; Africa General Service 1902-56, E.VII.R., one clasp, Somaliland 1902-04 (Sub. Lieut. J.F. Houstoun, R.N., H.M.S. Fox.); 1914-15 Star (Lt. Commr. J.F. Houstoun. R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (Commr. J.F. Houstoun. R.N.), naming details slightly rubbed on last, generally good very fine or better (6) Estimate £ 650-700 Captain James Follett Houstoun (1883-1952), appointed as Midshipman in H.M.S. Doris, on the Cape of Good Hope station, 15.9.1898; he served with Captain Prothero´´s Naval Brigade, under the orders of General Lord Metheun, South Africa 1899-1900; Sub-Lieutenant 15.9.1902; served in H.M.S. Fox from 5.10.1903, and after service off the Somaliland coast Houstoun was borne on the books of the same ship as Lieutenant during the Bahrein incident, March 1905; appointed as Lieutenant-Commander in H.M.S. Columbine (flag-ship of Admiral Sir Robert Lowry, Commanding on the Coast of Scotland), from November 1913; with the outbreak of the Great War he served in H.M.S. Linnet (Torpedo Boat Destroyer) from 9.10.1914; after a brief return to H.M.S. Columbine, Houstoun was appointed as Officer Commanding R.N.A.S. Dundee Air Station, from March 1916; nine months later he did a brief spell with the Intelligence Division of the Admiralty, before being appointed to the command of H.M.S. Oriole (Destroyer), from 23.10.1916; he held the same appointment in H.M.S. Trenchant (Destroyer), from 21.4.1917; Commander 31.12.1917; appointed to the command of H.M.S. Winchelsea, from 4.3.1918; retired 30.10.1922; Captain 9.1.1928.
