Tompkins, born Leytonstone, Essex; served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade; died of wounds on the Western Front 4.9.1918; at the beginning of September 1918 the 1st Battalion suffered heavy casualties during the storming of the Drocourt - Queant Line; Tompkins is buried in Ligny-St. Flochel British Cemetery, Averdoingt, France.
