An Interesting Great War ´P.O.W.´ Group of Five to Academic and Soldier, Colonel H.T. Jessop, 13th (Hammers) Battalion, Essex Regiment British War and Victory Medals (Captain H.T. Jessop.); Jubilee 1935; Coronation 1937; Territorial Decoration, G.V.R., silver gilt, with ´Territorial´ top riband bar, generally good very fine, mounted as originally worn, with the related dress miniature awards, and a enamelled R.AE.S.-I.A.S. London 1953 badge with paper insert typed ´Col. H.T. Jessop University College´ (5) Estimate £ 120-160 Colonel Herbert Turner Jessop (1888-1967), born Grays, Essex; educated at Palmer´´s Endowed School, Grays and University College London; commissioned Second Lieutenant 12th (Reserve) Battalion, Essex Regiment, 12.8.1915; served during the Great War with the Regiment on the Western Front, December 1916 - November 1917; Lieutenant 13th Battalion, Essex Regiment, 13.7.1917; the regimental history gives Jessop as Officer commanding D Company, 13th Battalion during the German counterattack south of the Bapaume-Cambrai Road, Cambrai 30.11.1917; his battalion made a stand, on the latter date, against the advancing enemy in the forward trench near Lock No. 5, canal du Nord. After 22 hours of fighting the battalion was finally overrun and the survivors including Jessop (who had been wounded) were taken prisoner of war. The 13th Battalion suffered a total of 10 Officers and 372 other ranks as casualties as a consequence of this action; Jessop returned to the United Kingdom 18.12.1918; after the Great War he held several academic positions at his old University, whilst combining this with being an Officer in the University of London O.T.C., in which he was promoted to Colonel and Commanding Officer 23.9.1936; he re-engaged for service as a Major in the Royal Signals (Territorial Army) during the Second World War.
