A Great War 1916 ´First Day of the Battle of the Somme´ Casualty Group of Three to Lance Corporal J.T. Marney, Essex Regiment 1914-15 Star (16798 L.Cpl J.T. Marney. Essex R.); British War and Victory Medals (16798 Pte. J.T. Marney. Essex R.), extremely fine (3) Estimate £ 280-320 16798 Lance Corporal Jack Thomas Marney, born East Ham; served with the 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment in France from 18.5.1915; he was killed in action 1.7.1916; the 2nd Battalion was part of the 12th Brigade, 4th Division; on 1.7.1916 they moved forward from Bertrancourt for attack between Beaumont-Hamel and Serre advancing at 8.45am on the left of Serre Road crossed the German line and then moved to right of Pendant Copse. Later strong counter attacks would force the Battalion back to the captured Quadrilateral. Of the 24 Officers and 606 men only 2 Officers and 192 other ranks survived the attack. Marney is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
