A ´Victorian´ M.S.M. Pair to Colour Sergeant J. Inifer, 40th Regiment New Zealand 1845-66, reverse undated (1225. Cr Sergt. Jas Inifer, 40th Foot.); Meritorious Service Medal, V.R. (C. Sgt J. Inifer 40\Foot), contact marks overall, otherwise very fine (2) Estimate £ 650-700 1225 Colour Sergeant James Inifer, M.S.M. (1821-1902), born Braintree, Essex; joined 40th Foot, 1839; served with the regiment in India for just under six years (entitled to Candahar, Ghuznee and Cabul Medal and Maharajpoor Star); Corporal 1844; served in Australia for nearly eleven years and was present during the troubles caused by the gold rush; Colour Sergeant 1855; entitled to the Army Long Service & G.C. which he would have returned for his Meritorious Service Medal; discharged 1864, after 24 years and 335 days with the Colours; served five years on the permanent staff of the Hampshire Militia Infantry; buried in Kelvedon Churchyard, Essex.
