Australia, tin squeeze on an octagonal cut flan of the 1852 Adelaide Pound, impression showing obverse design of the 1852, type 1 Pound, large crown over date within crenellated border, government assay office adelaide around, rev. blank, mark in field to right of date, a most unusual item and a clear impression linking this with the extremely rare first gold issue of Australia, good very fine, ?unique Estimate £ 200-300 The reason for this being produced is unclear. It may have been used to trial the dies used for the type 1 Adelaide Pound before they were struck, however the reverse with its tell tale die crack, that appeared after production began, cannot be seen on this obverse impression. Despite this, an intriguing specimen relating to early Australian coinage.
